January, 2009
Dear Fellow Member,
In just the last 18 months it is amazing how much our federal government has affected our industry. Further, it may be even more amazing how fast HARDI’s presence in Washington, D.C. has grown; or more accurately, has needed to grow in that same time. Last year we held our first Congressional Fly-In in partnership with ACCA, PHCC, and ASA. By all accounts it was a massive success, and the fifty other members who were there with us made it perfectly clear that HARDI had to do it again this year. So allow us to formally invite you to join us April 29-30, 2009, in our nation’s capital to meet with our new Congress that will most certainly be considering some of the most serious issues facing our industry and small business interests.
Both of us participated in last year’s Fly-In having never done anything like this before. Both of us went into our first meeting with our respective representatives nervous and still unsure what value this effort provided our businesses. However, by the end of a very busy day on Capitol Hill, we left anxious for our next opportunity to do it again. Ironically, the meetings with the congressmen we had not supported were the most enjoyable. Showing a member of Congress how a certain vote on a certain bill could cost jobs in their district, or provide a great opportunity for our businesses, was incredible and immediately reinforced our feelings that HARDI members can no longer afford not to be heard in Washington.
Tax, labor, environmental, and energy legislation are all lined up for 2009. In a year in which sales are already going to be difficult, this is the perfect time for us to show lawmakers exactly what businesses in their districts and states need. The power of HARDI’s partnerships with ACCA, PHCC, and ASA is rarely more evident than at this Fly-In. For a congressman to hear from manufacturers, distributors, and contractors of HVACR products from their district who all rely on one another, and all have similar concerns, is unparalleled in importance and impossible in any other forum.
If this would be your first time doing anything like this, do not let that stop you. HARDI arranges for an extremely thorough orientation by a highly entertaining and knowledgeable expert who had been a congressional chief of staff herself, as well as a complete briefing on all of the issues facing the membership. HARDI arranges all meetings for you based on your location(s), and even prepares and provides talking points that you can use as a guide during your congressional meetings and leave with your representative as a resource. They also make every attempt to combine meetings for distributors within the same district, so there is no need to be nervous about facing your congressmen alone.
You need to be there and you should take advantage of the opportunity to partner with your best ACCA contractors. We all do incentive trips and the like, but how many of us can say that we did one that actually SAVED money for our customers and us? That’s the opportunity this year’s Fly-In presents and why we’ve also created a separate registration form specifically for ACCA contractor members. (HARDI members: Use the HARDI Member Registration form.) Register and bring your customers so you can work together to show your representatives why you both need more energy-saving incentives and how many jobs it would cost both of you if taxes were increased or labor laws expanded.
Get your registration and those for your contractors into HARDI today so we can start scheduling your meetings on the Hill right away! However, if you still have reservations, we encourage you to contact either one of us to learn more about what our first Fly-In was like and why we feel so strongly about doing it again this year.
Sincerely,
Karen Madonia
